Waterfront Landscaping in North Palm Beach
A village of seawalls, docks and Intracoastal frontage, with a fertilizer blackout that runs through October and a 2025 rule protecting mature native trees.
Request a Property AssessmentOn the village's canal and Intracoastal lots, planting decisions are shaped by seawalls, docks and open water a few steps from the lawn edge. North Palm Beach keeps fertilizer at least ten feet from canals, lakes, wetlands and the top of a seawall, or three feet when a deflector shield, drop spreader or sharply edged liquid applicator is used. On a waterfront lot that setback decides how the back lawn is fed, and it shapes which beds near the water are planted to need little feeding at all.
The village tightened its tree rules in August 2025. Removing or relocating a protected tree, meaning a listed native species above a set trunk size or any swale tree, now requires a permit and mitigation. Live oak, gumbo limbo, slash pine and mahogany qualify at six inches in diameter, and cabbage palms at twelve feet of clear trunk. Partner crews working in North Palm Beach check a tree against that list before any removal is quoted, and plan replacements to meet mitigation.
The properties
Housing runs from single-family homes on canal and Intracoastal lots to the towers and low-rise condominium buildings of Old Port Cove on the Intracoastal. On a seawalled lot the rear lawn ends at the water, so the ten-foot fertilizer setback can take in a real share of the turf. Condominium grounds are run by associations and lean on entry plantings, pool decks and perimeter hedges that need to look kept year-round. Lost Tree Village shares the 33408 address but sits outside the village, so its rules differ.
On the ground
What landscapes in North Palm Beach contend with
Five months without nitrogen
With nitrogen and phosphorus off the table from June through October, St. Augustinegrass has to enter summer in good condition. UF/IFAS notes that heavy inorganic nitrogen drives rapid growth and raises chinch bug susceptibility, so a spring program aims for steady rather than lush growth, with mowing at 3 to 4 inches. Irrigation is timed outside the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. window the village prohibits, and summer care leans on mowing height and water.
Ficus hedges and whitefly
Where a property still relies on a ficus hedge for privacy, ficus whitefly is the main risk. UF/IFAS reports that, left untreated, it can cause severe defoliation, branch dieback and eventually plant death, and that several parasitoids attack it in Florida. A program inspects leaf undersides through the warm months, treats when populations build, and, where a hedge keeps failing, discusses replacing it with a species better suited to the site.
Lethal bronzing in cabbage palms
Lethal bronzing is a phytoplasma disease found in Florida in 2006 and later isolated from the cabbage palm. It is spread by a planthopper, not by pruning tools, and UF/IFAS advises removing a palm promptly once it shows symptoms and tests positive. Because the village now protects cabbage palms above twelve feet of clear trunk, a removal here calls for both a lab diagnosis and a check against the tree permit rules.

Fertilizer blackout, June 1 to October 31
Between June 1 and October 31 the village prohibits fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus on turf and landscape plants. It is also barred on saturated soil, during a tropical storm or hurricane watch or warning, and when more than two inches of rain is forecast in 24 hours. Year-round, fertilizer stays ten feet from canals, lakes, wetlands and the top of a seawall, or three feet with a deflector shield or drop spreader.
SourceTree removal permit for protected trees
Since August 2025, removing, destroying or relocating a protected tree requires a village tree removal permit and mitigation. Protected trees are listed native species above set sizes, such as live oak and gumbo limbo at six inches in diameter or cabbage palm at twelve feet of clear trunk, plus every swale tree. Dead trees, fruit trees and listed invasive species are exempt, as are risk removals documented under state law.
SourceHours for mowers and power equipment
In residential districts, power-driven machinery, tools and equipment, mowers included, may run only from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Partner crews schedule mowing, blowing and hedge work inside those hours.

Landscaping in North Palm Beach: questions
Is Lost Tree Village governed by North Palm Beach?
No. Lost Tree Village uses North Palm Beach mailing addresses but lies within no city, and both North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens have positioned themselves in case that ever changes. Village code, including the fertilizer, tree and work-hour rules on this page, does not apply there. Work in Lost Tree follows county rules and the community's own standards.
Do I need a permit to take down a tree?
It depends on species and size. A permit is required for protected trees: listed native species above set sizes, such as live oak, gumbo limbo or mahogany at six inches in diameter or cabbage palm at twelve feet of clear trunk, and any swale tree. Dead trees, fruit trees and listed invasives are exempt, as is a residential removal backed by an ISA certified arborist's or licensed landscape architect's risk documentation under Florida Statute 163.045.
Why won't the lawn crew fertilize next to our seawall?
Village code keeps fertilizer at least ten feet from the top of a seawall and from canals, lakes and wetlands, reduced to three feet with a deflector shield, drop spreader or sharply edged liquid applicator. Newly planted turf or plants in that zone may be fed for 60 days, starting 30 days after planting. The rule exists to keep nutrients out of the water.
What hours can landscape crews work?
In residential districts, mowers and other power equipment may run 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Construction-type work such as excavation and grading is tighter: nothing on Sundays or legal holidays, no start before 9 a.m. on Saturdays, and no unreasonable noise between 5:30 p.m. and 8 a.m.
